British and French Anarchism, the struggle against colonialism and the formation of postcolonial identity (1950-1970)
PGR Supervisors: Dr Matthew Adams and Dr Poppy Cullen
This research project builds on my pre-existing studies on imperialism in Africa, by looking at the impact
of British and French anarchism on the African independence struggles. The project examines several key themes currently under-explored in both the diverse literatures on anarchist history and postcolonial politics. These include how anarchists engaged with the politics of imperialism, how anarchist ideas interacted with anti-imperial struggles in Africa, and conversely, how anti-imperial struggles in Africa shaped anarchist identities within Europe.
Finally, this project will identify ways in which anarchist circles in France and Britain contributed to discussions on postcolonial migration and postcolonial identity following the disintegration of African colonialism. The use of a comparative study between Britain and France will provide interesting insight into these questions of decolonisation and draw together both French and British academia in the fields of postcolonialism and anarchist history.
