The importance of gender is increasingly recognised in energy research, with growing awareness of the interlinks between energy access and gender equity. However, significant gaps persist in understanding how this nexus plays out in intricate ways in the everyday practices and lived experiences of women in the Global South, and its intersection with the UN’s broader Sustainable Development Goals.

This talk draws on case studies from rural and urban Pakistan, as well as refugee camps in Bangladesh, to examine how the gender-energy nexus manifests across various socio-spatial contexts and its broader implications for sustainable development targets, including access to basic services, health and well-being, spatial justice and climate resilience.

By integrating feminist and justice-based frameworks, the talk raises critical questions about the multifaceted impact of infrastructural deficiencies and gendered disparities, providing insights into synergistic, gender-responsive planning and policy solutions for equitable and just transitions.
