Going to extremes: Climbing Everest to measure the weather
Dr. Tom Matthews, Lecturer in Climate Science, will deliver a talk on when he helped install the world's largest weather station on Mount Everest.
This is the story of Dr Tom Matthew's role installing the highest weather stations on Earth during the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Extreme Expedition to Mount Everest 2019.
Tom and the team deployed a network of five weather stations, including the two highest in the world – at the South Col and on Everest’s 'balcony' - almost 8,500m above sea level.
The talk will address why the team went to such lengths, and what insights the near-real-time weather data being transmitted by the stations are providing.
Tom will also communicate the realities of what it was like climbing Everest, for science, during one its most chaotic and deadly seasons to date.
Light refreshments will be served from 5.30pm.
