Overview

Liberal Arts at 天堂视频 is a uniquely interdisciplinary programme that explores what it means to be human, and how this is impacted by social, cultural, economic, and political conditions past and present. The degree enables you to think creatively across subject boundaries, engaging with contemporary, global challenges.

Our degree offers both flexibility and focus. You can choose optional modules from different subjects in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, including (but not limited to): Art History and Visual Culture, English, History, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Politics, and Sociology. These options are carefully curated to produce interdisciplinary connections between them, empowering you to both flexibly tailor the degree to your own interests, and build a focus on a specific theme or area, without having to Major in a particular subject. Modern Languages can be taken at every part of your degree and are available at all levels, including complete beginners who have never studied a Language before.

Interdisciplinarity is a vital part of our Liberal Arts degree. At every stage of the course, you will take core Liberal Arts modules, allowing you to combine the knowledge and skills gained through your different subjects, and apply these to produce nuanced, interdisciplinary analyses.

The skills you gain through this programme, such as critical thinking, independent judgement and decision making, and coordinating with others, are highly sought after by employers. Moreover, you can take a placement year, developing key skills in a relevant industry or sector, and significantly enhancing your employability after graduation. Alternatively, you can study abroad for a year, or even combine the two!

Introduction to Liberal Arts

The aim of this module is:

  • To introduce the liberal arts and the principles of interdisciplinarity.
  • To introduce key concepts and critical vocabulary students need to undertake studies in the liberal arts.
  • To stimulate and apply essential skills in critical analysis.

Narrative Forms

This module aims to develop students' skills in the analysis of narrative. Through study of diverse primary materials, it will build awareness of the functions and effects of storytelling. It will also give students an opportunity to develop their own skills as producers of short narratives.

The Atlantic World: The Americas, Europe and Africa since the 15th Century

This module introduces students to the concept of the 'Atlantic World', surveys the early modern history of Africa, the Americas and Western Europe, and explores the key historical themes of this period including race, religion and empire.

Gaming Cultures

The module will introduce students to the interdisciplinary study of digital games and the video gaming sector, which is now one of the most significant and profitable global creative industries. The module will explore: the economics of the global digital games market; the evolving technologies of gaming; concepts and methods for analysing games; and the wider significance of an increasingly ubiquitous gaming culture.

Introduction to Philosophy

This module provides an introduction to the central figures, history, concepts and arguments of modern western philosophy, showing how those concepts and arguments have been treated. Lectures will include an introduction to traditions of ethics, epistemology and metaphysics as well as covering issue areas salient to political philosophy. Though there will be an emphasis on understanding western philosophical traditions, material and discussion will also critique and go beyond western-centric scholarship. Seminars will follow up on the lectures, using in-class exercises to support student understanding of key concepts and arguments. The module will introduce and provide a basic understanding of key works, characteristic arguments and rhetorical forms constitutive of important sections of modern philosophy.

NB. If you select this module, you MUST complete the semester 2 Introduction to Philosophy module as well.

Crime and Social Welfare: Policy in Practice

The aims of this module are to:

  • Explore several policy issues through the experience and knowledge of practitioners;
  • Provide an insight into the work of selected professions and agencies;
  • Introduce crime policy and social policy in action and practice.

Liberal Arts and the Public Sphere

The aims of this module are to:

  • To gain in-depth understanding of how the liberal arts contribute to contemporary public life and public institutions.
  • To develop a critical appreciation of the intersectionality of knowledge, cultural norms and values, socio-economic conditions, and political perspectives in relation to the Liberal Arts and the public sphere.

Art and visual culture since 1850

The aims of the module are to:

  • introduce central developments within art and visual culture during the 19th century and up to the present day, mapping these onto historical events, themes, and discourses;
  • provide a critical response to canons, concepts, and narratives within modern and contemporary art and visual culture;
  • develop key art historical skills such as comparative visual analysis;
  • equip students with the skills required to undertake research into historical works of art and visual culture, with a focus on modern and contemporary practice

Social and Cultural Geography

The aims of this module are to introduce students to key concepts in social and cultural geography, examine case studies of social and cultural change in the global North and global South, and familiarise students with writers and texts in social and cultural geography.

Elephants and Engines: An Introduction to Creative Writing

The aims of the module are to introduce techniques in contemporary creative writing; to provide students with the opportunity to explore concepts and ideas relating to creative writing, and to apply what they have learnt; to foster independent creative writing as well as providing an opportunity to work with other students on collaborative pieces, feedback and editing.

Introduction to Film

This module aims to give students an opportunity to explore in depth key concepts, approaches and areas of interest in film studies.

Slavery to Black Lives Matter: African American Culture 1840 - 2020

This module offers students the opportunity to engage with a wide range of African American cultural production (literary, cinematic and musical) from 1840 to the present day and to explore the complex formal, social and political questions raised by these diverse primary materials.

Critical Approaches in Liberal Arts

The aim of this module is to build on the interdisciplinary skills and knowledge at Part A to critically examine a series of significant concepts, theories, and ideas from multiple perspectives within the Humanities. It will combine these approaches to formulate an interdisciplinary engagement with these key issues and debates.

Contemporary Debates in Philosophy

The aim of this module is to develop the skills required to understand and reflect on philosophical arguments and debates, with a focus on key contemporary themes in philosophy (and philosophical components of contemporary problems in the wider world) as well as historical background on the development of philosophy. Students will develop a critical understanding of the central concepts and topics in contemporary philosophy through examining a range of philosophical traditions.

Urban Geographies

The aim of this module is to use a geographical perspective to explore leading-edge processes of urban change and urban policy, and to critically examine their consequences for communities and the environment at a range of scales.

Strange Fascination: Queer Desires and Identities in Literature, 1886-1952

This module aims to introduce students to the range and diversity of queer literature from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The module will consider how authors engaged with, and helped to shape, contemporary understandings of gender and sexuality, considering how these concepts shifted over time and across different contexts.

The Weird Tale

The module aims to explore the development of the Weird Tale in Britain and the US from the late nineteenth century onwards, attempting to define the form, to examine its history, and to engage critically with its preoccupations. In doing so, it will investigate some of the conventions of Gothic and popular fiction over the past century or so. We will also examine the extent to which 'Weird Fiction' is a significant aspect of twenty-first-century culture, looking at such topics as transformation, alienation, science, the body, and visionary experience.

Animal Tales: Non-human Animals in Literature, Philosophy, and Film

From the animals in Franz Kafka's short stories to BoJack Horseman, from nature documentaries to viral clips of cats and dogs online, contemporary culture is saturated with narratives and representations of non-human animals.

This module aims to introduce students to ways of critically interrogating these narratives and representations, drawn from a variety of media, analysing them in relation to recent ethical, political, cultural, and philosophical debates concerning our lives with and as animals.

The module will give students opportunities to discuss these debates in depth, bringing information and ideas together from different disciplines and topics (e.g. anthropomorphism and anthropocentrism, post-humanism, the nonhuman, biopolitics, fragility, empathy, friendship, the Anthropocene, eating animals, capitalism, feminism, ableism, postcoloniality; racialisation).

History of Political Thought (20 Credit)

The aim of this module is to examine some of the main thinkers in the history of political thought.

 

History of Political Thought (10 credit)

The aim of this module is to examine the development of the political thought by looking at key concepts, thinkers and movements in the history of ideas.

Modern China in a Global Perspective

This module provides an overview of modern Chinese history, focusing on China's entanglement with the world at large. It will be shown how modern China in cultural, social and economic terms was shaped by external influences and in return made its imprint on the wider world. The module thus provides insights into the development of a rising global power through studying its recent past, while at the same addressing issues of cultural difference.

Victorian Values Reconsidered

This module introduces students to debates in the social, political and cultural history of Victorian Britain, with particular emphases on histories of childhood, democratisation, poverty, sex and sexuality, crime and deviance, religion, and race. The course also explores representations of the Victorians since 1901, addressing key historiographical questions about why and how the reputation of the period and its people has undergone constant revision.

Media, Culture and Crime

The aims of this module are to examine the relationship between media, culture and crime and to analyse media representations of crime and criminal behaviour as well as criminal justice agencies.

Screen Cultures

The aim of this module is to discuss a range of influential and acclaimed 20th and 21st-century films and to examine why these films have earned their reputation by analysing their interface with, and impact on, wider social, political and historical developments in histories of media.

Cultural Spaces and Digital Landscapes

The aim of this module is for students to critically examine a range of cultural spaces and digital landscapes..

The Politics of Star Wars

The aim of this module is to introduce students to various aspects of politics and history as depicted within and emanating from the Star Wars films. Students will consider how these depictions can be used as a lens to understand key political concepts and their relationship to contemporary issues, topic and events.

Gender and Global Politics

The aim of this module is to take an intersectional perspective to explore how gender relates to politics, both domestic and international. It explores some of the different ways that sex, gender and feminism have been theorized and framed. As well as how gender shapes and impacts upon phenomena in domestic and global politics such as political representation and leadership; rights and citizenship; sexual violence; reproductive justice; social justice and resistance; conflict and terrorism.

African States and Nations: Before and After Colonialism, 1850-1990

This module introduces students to nineteenth and twentieth century African history, and explores the development of African states and nations in the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial periods. We will address why it has often been difficult for Africans to form successful nation-states and the impact of colonial legacies. The module will situate Africa in the wider global context, but will focus primarily on African experiences and how African peoples have shaped their continent's history.

Digital Lives and Society

Digital technologies increasingly shape our everyday lives and societies. This module takes a sociological approach and examines how digital technologies shape identities, interaction, intimate relations, inequalities, the economy, health and mental health.

The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to critically construct their own perspective on an interdisciplinary topic of their choice. By means of initialising, planning and producing an individual project, students will further develop their skills in research techniques and methods.

Employment, Work and Life

Drawing on contemporary examples, the central aim of this module is for students to examine the strategies different social groups adopt in order to make a living in uncertain economic times.

Environmental Change in the Anthropocene

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of some of the major drivers of change affecting natural environments at varying spatial and temporal scales, in the context of the major changes to these systems observed more recently, which has given rise to the term the Anthropocene.

The module will explore the ecological response of both terrestrial and aquatic systems to these changes, and how these responses (such as ecosystem functioning, ecological services and biodiversity) can themselves have impacts on human activity and society. Knowledge of contemporary (Anthropocene) functioning of major ecological systems will be combined with evidence from palaeoenvironmental archives to explore the relationships between environmental stressors, and ecological systems, today and in the past.

The module will include the use of various types of evidence (e.g. documentary, inventory, palaeoenvironmental) and modelling approaches to understand how global biogeochemical cycles and major ecosystems (e.g. tropical forests, freshwater lakes, coastal regions) have changed over time, and introduce the debate over what constitutes the Anthropocene and when it might have started.

Cruel and Unusual Punishment

This module aims to introduce students to fiction and film that represents the practice of punishment in American history and to analyse this in relation to competing theories of punishment.

The Asia-Pacific in Global Politics

This Module explores the various vectors of international politics in the Asia-Pacific; and locates this dynamic region within the larger framework of global politics. Students are expected to demonstrate an appreciation of the web of interactions in the Asia-Pacific at the end of the module. Topics include political geography, diplomatic relations, international political economy, and identity politics in East Asia.

Contemporary Political Philosophy

The aims of this module are to:

  • outline and discuss important themes in contemporary political philosophy by encouraging reflection on a number of common basic assumptions and intuitions about the nature of politics, the responsibilities of social and political institutions and the principles upon which ideas about politics are founded;
  • encourage you to tackle some of the most profound and enduring questions facing citizens and policy makers in liberal democratic states and to evaluate the various ways in which different philosophical traditions have approached these issues.

Jim Crow, Bootleggers and Okies: American Culture 1865-1940

This module offers students an opportunity to explore in depth how American culture engaged with the nation's modernisation from the end of the Civil War to the point of US entry into World War 2.

Environmental Thought

This module examines the ethical (including moral, social, and political) dimensions of environmental thought, broadly construed to encompass a range of questions about human relationships with plants, animals, ecosystems, the climate, and the wider nonhuman world. Ethico-political frameworks explored might include ecologism, animal rights, biocentrism, and similar. Practical normative questions explored might include the ethics of diets and food systems; the political inclusion of animals; the question of who is responsible for putting right environmental harm; species conservation; green militarization; and green democracy.

Gender, Sex and Society

This module introduces students to main themes and perspectives within the sociology of gender, with an emphasis on contemporary analyses of feminism and how our are lives are gendered within different social contexts. Students will engage with theoretical perspectives and empirical analyses.

Documenting the World

The aim of this module is to view a selection of film and television documentaries in order to discuss their significance, locating them historically in social, political and cultural life.

Mobilities, transnationalism and diaspora

The aims of this module are to:

  • outline the concepts and typologies related to the study of transnational mobilities, transnationalism and diaspora;
  • analyse the nature and geographies of transnational mobilities, transnationalism and diaspora using a theoretical and a contextualised case study approach;
  • evaluate the outcomes of transnational mobilities and diasporic networks.

Neo-Victorianism

The aims of the module are to introduce students to a representative range of Neo-Victorian fiction; to account for the recent fascination of contemporary writers and readers with the literature and culture of the Victorian period; and to interrogate the issues raised by historiographical metafiction.

Adapting Shakespeare

The aim of this module is to enable students, working with other students as part of their learning community, to discover and explore the ways in which Shakespeare adapted his source materials to produce the scripts we know, and how those scripts are in turn adapted in modern performance. To achieve this, students study closely Shakespeare's scripts, his sources, and a range of critical views.

Feminist Philosophy

This module aims to a) give students a sound grounding in leading strands of feminist philosophy; and b) to allow students to be able to position themselves within these debates. It will do this by focusing on texts and debates: students will read texts in preparation for the class sessions, and will be encouraged to critique, compare, contrast, engage and position themselves in relation to the writings under consideration.

War in the 21st Century

 The aim of the module is to provide students with an advanced understanding of the nature of contemporary war. Students will understand and explain changes in the character of conflict. Issues such as technology on the conduct of war as well as climate change provide a new appreciation of how States fight.

After Empire: South Asia since 1945

This course examines the emergence, evolution and contemporary existence of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal) since 1945. It explores the moments of incorporation, trajectories of development and marginal spaces, apart from the mainstream of South Asia today.

Race and Racism in Modern Society

The aim of this module is to enable students to examine concepts of 'race' and racism from a sociological-historical perspective and to critically reflect on 'race' as a major category of social inequality and identity in our Contemporary World. The module encourages students to explore the social construction and applications of the idea of race in the development of Western society , and identify intersectionalities between race and other categories of social inclusion and exclusion in Modern Society.

Health, the Body and Culture

The module aims to introduce students to critical scholarly and practical debates on physical and mental health and the body, drawing on medical sociology, cultural studies and science and technology studies. We will explore social scientific concepts and empirical research to enable students to analyse and reflect on ways to tackle contemporary problems and developments related to health, mental health and the body.

Consumption, Culture and Everyday Life

The aim of the module is to allow students to develop knowledge and understanding of key theoretical perspectives and empirical approaches to the sociology of consumption and culture. Emphasis is given to the diverse ways in which culture and consumption are experienced in everyday social life. As such, particular prominence is given to how social divisions such as gender, class and ethnicity shape consumption preferences and cultural practices.

The University Language Centre provides a range of modules in French, German, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese from beginners' level upwards. You may take these language modules as part of your degree, enter the programme at your level of competence and work upwards one semester at a time.

Through your language modules you will practise a range of transferable skills, from face-to-face communication and presentation skills, to producing multi-media materials, you will develop skills in your chosen language in small, interactive classes, and will gain greater cultural competence as you move up the levels.

Teaching at 天堂视频 is divided across two semesters; contact hours are typically 36 or 48 hours for a 20-credit module.

In addition to scheduled teaching, our academic staff are available for one-to-one meetings, essay feedback and support tutorials, and for meetings with Academic Advisees. Students benefit from our Virtual Learning Environment (with additional learning opportunities through online quizzes, discussion boards and blogs), lecture capture recording, and library facilities, as well as other dedicated research and study environments.

How you'll be assessed

A wide range of assessment methods are used on our Liberal Arts degree course.

As well as familiar types of assessments, such as essays, exams, and in-class tests, modules may also assess your work through critical reflection, group and/or video presentations, podcasts, posters, blogs, primary source analysis, mini-research projects, or the production of magazine articles. In your final year you will produce an interdisciplinary capstone project, which may take a variety of formats.

Placement year

A professional placement allows you to test drive a career and stand out to employers. Placement options are wide and varied but would typically be a graduate level role with one of a broad range of companies or organisations based in the UK or overseas.

We have strong industry links which help our students secure year-long placements in the UK and internationally. These placements are an invaluable opportunity to enhance employability and apply skills and knowledge to a working environment. You are expected to secure your own placement, however, extensive support from the School Placement Officer and Careers Network team is always available. Transfer between the three and four year courses is normally possible.

Placement companies

Students from the School of Social Sciences and Humanities have a broad range of skills meaning that the placements they undertake are wide and varied.

In recent years our students have completed placements with Volkswagen, Molson Coors, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Samsung Electronics, Bosch, Confederation of British Industry, PwC, National Grid, Renault, Department of Work and Pensions, Food Standards Agency, Bedfordshire Police, Instron and Sky.

Students have undertaken roles such as Logistics Manager, Marketing Intern, Management Consultant, Social Research Officer, Community Safety Hub Team Assistant, Corporate Finance Analyst, Sports Data Researcher, HR, PR & Social Media Intern and Corporate Affairs. Students also have the opportunity to develop their commercial and professional skills by undertaking a Year in Enterprise.

During their third year, selected students can pursue their own business idea, supported by a business mentor to develop their strategy, operations, risk analysis and finances.

Additional award

This course comes with the option to undertake a professional placement for a year, at the end of which you will gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS). This is an additional award to the final qualification you will receive once you have successfully completed this course.

By choosing this course you'll have the option to take advantage of this exciting opportunity, giving you the chance to not only experience new cultures and visit exciting destinations, but also to expand your learning experience. The length of a study abroad placement would be confirmed by your School or Department.

Studying abroad allows you to get ahead in the job market by gaining an international perspective and improving your ability to establish relations with people from different cultural backgrounds. English Language Assistantship

If you are interested in teaching English abroad, you can apply for a British Council placement to work as a paid English language assistant in a school abroad during your third year.

Additional award

This course comes with the option to study abroad for a year, at the end of which you will gain a Diploma in International Studies (DIntS). This is an additional award to the final qualification you will receive once you have successfully completed this course.

Preferred subjects

While no specific A Level (or equivalent) subjects are required, we strongly prefer combinations drawn from the following list: Ancient History, Art History, Classical Civilisation, Communication and Culture, English Language/Literature, Geography, Media Studies, Politics, History, Languages (non-native), Philosophy, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Theatre Studies.

BTEC Level 3 Diplomas preferred subjects - If studying a BTEC qualification then Business is preferred, although other BTEC subjects may be considered when offered in combination with one or more academic A Levels outlined above

Selection

Applicants are usually selected solely on the basis of their UCAS application, but in exceptional cases, an interview may be required. If applicants are made an offer of a place, they will be invited to visit, giving them the opportunity to meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at 天堂视频.

Many of our courses receive a large number of applications for each available place.  We cannot unfortunately always make offers to all applicants who are predicted to achieve/have achieved grades in line with our advertised typical offers.

For students studying in the USA, typical offers for entry onto undergraduate level courses are based on obtaining 3.2/4.0 GPA in the High School Graduation Diploma, in addition to a combination of any three of the following:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Exam

  • College level class credit (should normally be taken in Grade 12 for one semester, and be equivalent to 3 credits/units in an academic subject)
