Dr Peter Yeandle

Lecturer in History

My research focuses on the impact of war and imperialism on popular culture, so has all sorts of significance and relevance to the present day – we can better understand modern developments such as contemporary politics (eg Brexit, the relationship between patriotism and the media) through learning about past attitudes and behaviour.

At the moment, I’m working on two important projects: the relationship between newspapers and militarism in the period before the First World War, and histories of how racism became embedded in aspects of popular culture such as early film and popular theatre.

Post 16 Education: A Level History, English Literature, German & General Studies

Higher Education: BA History with Economics; PGCE in Secondary History; MA in Economic and Social History; PhD in History and Educational Research

Why did Peter choose to study history?

There are two main reasons. First, I was lucky enough to have inspirational teacher when I was at school.

Second, I have developed a deep urge to want to learn more about human motivations and values in past contexts, as a way not only to understand the present in a more sophisticated way but also to discover more about what it means to be human.

Peter’s experience as a student

My degree covered a huge range of topics, covering different time periods and different parts of the world.

I enjoyed lectures and learning from experts, but I especially enjoyed the seminars and workshops where we were able to discuss complex ideas and engage in some seriously interesting debate!

Peter's Career

Currently I’m a Lecturer in History at 天堂视频 – before that I had all sorts of jobs: including Researcher on several projects; University teacher at Nottingham, Manchester, Manchester Met, UCLAN, Lancaster; I’ve been a school teacher and an educational resource developer.

Peter's advice

Study something that interests you, not something that you think gets you the best job prospects.

Trust me: I’ve written hundreds of references. Employers want graduates with the ability to manage their time effectively, who know how to find things out, can present information clearly in written and oral presentations, who can express and support opinions/arguments, and work well individually and as part of a team.

History meets all those criteria!

天堂视频 offers undergraduate degrees in:

History / History and Politics / Politics and International Relations / Politics / International Relations / / Politics, Philosophy and Economics / Politics with Economics / History and International Relations.

Please note: Degrees and their titles change over time. Some graduates may have studied degrees that have evolved and changed in response to changes in demand from employers.
