Our Water Engineering for Development (Distance Learning) MSc is designed to develop careers for improving the delivery of water supply and environmental sanitation infrastructure and services internationally, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The programme provides knowledge of key concepts and principles to assess, design, implement and operate sustainable and equitable water and environmental sanitation infrastructure and services. It develops a critical approach to the global principles, and national and local practice, for achieving sustainable infrastructure and services for all consumers.

Our Water Engineering for Development (Distance Learning) MSc is managed by the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) in the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering whose programmes are well-established and held in high regard by practitioners and employers from international development and emergency sectors. Modules are taught by experts with considerable experience of working in low- and middle-income countries.

Comprehensive resources are available on the online learning environment (LEARN) for each module, including study guidance, highly illustrated unit notes, additional reading materials, YouTube clips of laboratory procedures and experimental setups, and subject-specific references and texts.

Key aims of the programme are to:

  • provide knowledge of key concepts and principles to assess and design water and environmental sanitation;
  • provide the multidisciplinary knowledge and skills to assess, design, implement and operate sustainable water and environmental sanitation infrastructure;
  • develop appropriate analytical skills for water in the natural environment and piped systems using computer models and other approaches;
  • develop a critical approach to the global principles and local practice of sustainable public health infrastructure for all levels of consumers; and
  • encourage critical analysis through an in-depth study of one specialist topic.

This degree is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM).

The Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) includes the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, the Permanent Way Institution, and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation. The accreditation is on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.* For further information, please visit .

The Water Engineering for Development programme comprises core modules covering all core aspects of water supply and sanitation engineering. You can choose one of three optional modules, enabling you to tailor the programme to meet your individual needs. There is also an individual research dissertation, which is linked to your specific interests and may include working with partner agencies around the world.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to:

  • provide a critical understanding of, and skills relating to, aquatic environments, examining quantities, qualities and ecologies of natural water resources and how these relate to society¿s needs
  • demonstrate need for and processes of environmental assessments in low- and middle-income countries.

The aims of this module are to:

  • provide students with a critical understanding of, and skills relating to, the reasons, principles and constraints in carrying out research, monitoring and evaluation in a variety of resource poor contexts
  • introduce students with subject specific data gathering and assessment tools relating to water and sanitation services in low and middle-income countries.

The aim of the module is to provide students with an overview of the design, operation and management of water supplies in urban and rural areas and familiarise students with the principles of designing and maintaining water treatment, distribution systems and point water sources in low and middle-income countries.

The aim of this module is to understand the role, and use, of both hydrogeological data and modelling on (i) in the management and protection of groundwater resources and (ii) in determining health risks and water quality as a result of the movement of contaminants in groundwater.

The aim of this module is to develop an advanced understanding of the drivers of flooding, what flood risk is and how it might change in the future, and the tools and strategies available to manage flood risk.

The aim of this module is for the student to gain skills of designing and operating sanitation services in rural and urban areas of low- and middle-income countries, with a critical understanding of key technical, environmental and human factors to be considered when facilitating sanitation interventions.

The aim of this module is to introduce participants to the principles, concepts, challenges and key issues of managing sustainable water supply and environmental sanitation infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries, using the management of solid waste as a practical example.


The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their degree.

Optional modules (choose one)

The aims of this module are to:

  • introduce general built environment professionals to sustainable Disaster Risk Management (DRM) activities (structural and non-structural) worldwide and
  • explore the links between engineering and planning interventions and subsequent increases or decreases in disaster risk (within the context of the challenges posed by climate change).

The aims of this module are to show how a flexible approach based on appropriate assessments supports the design and implementation of an emergency water supply and/or sanitation (WASH) intervention that meets the needs of the users whilst addressing environmental, institutional and time based issues.

Our Water Engineering for Development (Distance Learning) MSc will develop your skills in qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis and dissemination, as well as planning and problem-solving.

WEDC graduates join a respected global community of alumni which includes more than 1,000 people from over 70 countries.

Many WEDC alumni work for international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Oxfam, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and WaterAid, and agencies such as UNICEF, as well as national governments. Several graduates have held high ministerial office and have shaped national government policy in the water and sanitation sector in their countries.
