Across sectors, there is high demand for managers and leaders who are well equipped to bridge the gap between technical and managerial perspectives. This degree has been designed with industry partners to address the need for these sought-after hybrid managers.

Offered full or part-time, this master’s is suitable if you are new to the subject or already have a grounding in the basics of IT or management. It is particularly relevant if you are looking to move towards a leadership role in digital technologies, information systems management, business and digital media analytics, big data or artificial intelligence.

Throughout the programme, you will explore the principles and practice of information systems and digital innovation.

There is a strong focus on topical business challenges, such as the ethical and legislative issues of using digital technologies, the impact of these technologies on employee expectations and business operations, and how to unlock insights from big data to drive business and social improvement.

You will also delve into the relationship between traditional technology independent areas of an organisation, and relevant non-technical business areas.

Alongside this, you will develop a solid suite of functional hard skills, such as managing information systems, new technologies (including SAP S/4 HANA), cloud computing, ethical AI, technology driven business models, basic coding and analytics.

Plus, you will build the key soft skills employers are looking for, including creative problem solving, critical thinking, team working, communication, personal resilience and dealing with organisational volatility.

Our MSc Information Systems and Digital Innovation will give you the critical technological and analytical skills needed for the implementation and leadership of information systems and digital innovation initiatives.

Compulsory modules

Organisational Design and Network Thinking for Social Impact (15 credits)

The aims of the module are to:

  • Consider the challenges faced by humanity as articulated in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and appreciate how the complexity of these challenges require a systems / networked approach to develop innovative, multi-dimensional solutions that go beyond disciplines, individuals and organisations.
  • Gain an understanding of how networks can influence interaction and collaboration to create practical solutions to complex challenges and co-create conditions for collective benefit.
  • Analyse the design of Organisational structures and consider the emergence of fluid, agile and decentralised organisations that follow holacratic principles of self-organisation.
  • Utilise Design Thinking as a theoretical framework to develop and iterate ideas, solve problems and to prototype and test appropriate and considered solutions.
  • Encourage personal skills of communication, teamwork, decision-making and collaborative leadership. Encourage a holistic approach when dealing with the complexity of global social challenges.
  • Evaluation of new technologies, protocols and instruments for connection and collaboration.
  • Inspire the social impact leaders of the future.

Information Architecture (15 credits)

The aims of this module are for students to be able to:

  • understand and distinguish between the information needs of users in an information and knowledge based organisation;
  • understand the technology that has defined the semantic web;
  • understand the new technologies that make up the semantic web;
  • understand the methods available for integrating external and internal data, information and knowledge.

Business Models and New Technologies (15 credits)

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop a critical understanding and practical ability in use of the core IT infrastructure, architecture, processes and technologies that underpin business efficiency and effectiveness in the modern organisation.

Data Science (15 credits)

The aims of this module are to understand:

  • data science per se
  • the process and cultures required to conduct data science
  • technology platforms and programming techniques for data science projects
  • the value data science can generate for organisations.

Compulsory modules

Enterprise Resource Planning (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce and develop the key principles of enterprise resource planning (ERP);
  • to introduce the fundamental concepts of supply chain management (SCM) in the context of ERP;
  • to provide an understanding of the role of ERP systems in the effective management of organisational processes;
  • to provide hands-on experience of SAP, an industry standard ERP software.

Managing Big Data (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to develop a critical appreciation of the theory and practice of managing big data and its significance for business in the global environment
  • to develop an awareness of the skills required for managing big data in different sectors
  • to understand how big data can be used to address real world issues
  • to understand how business opportunities can be identified and exploited using big data and big data analytics
  • to explore the range of software tools available for managing large data sets.

Leadership and Project Management (15 credits)

The aim of this module is to give students an understanding of how to manage projects and their risks for both the individual managing their own and for the team leader managing a larger-scale project. The emphasis is on getting a quality product or service delivered on time and within budget.

Ethics and the Trust Economy (15 credits)

The aims of this module are to:

  • Understand and critically review the societal and ethical issues associated with the digital technologies in the 21st century. Understand the minimum legal standard required and also consider higher standards that reflect societal moral operating principles. Consider a holistic view from the differing perspectives of citizens, individuals, parents, employees, employers and leaders.
  • Understand the basics of bias and its impact on ethical decision making.
  • Understand the elements that build trust, how these are measured and their impact both societally and economically.
  • Understand the basic concepts of data ethics and its application.
  • Understand the impact of cultural differences in a globally connected society.
  • Apply multidisciplinary concepts including diversity, equality, inclusion, critical thinking, reflection to construct, articulate and communicate ethical purpose from a leadership perspective.
  • Be able to rationalise personal thinking, decision making and reaction (from an understanding of bias).
  • Create an ethical framework that could be applied for leadership development. Apply data ethics in design, accounting for cultural difference.
  • Encourage critical thinking, personal reflection.
  • Work and collaborate in a diverse team.
  • Articulate a critical analysis of the ethical standards required by senior leaders in today's society.
  • Encourage a holistic approach when dealing with the complexity of a digitally connected global society.

Research Skills Development (15 credits)

The aims of this module are to:

  • equip students with the relevant theoretical and practical research method knowledge required to design, plan and execute an individual dissertation;
  • give students an understanding of research methods which will allow them to critically review research by others in information science, management and business technology fields;
  • apply and develop knowledge, skills and experience acquired during the programme of study.

Compulsory modules

Dissertation ISDI (45 credits)

The aims of this module are to:

  • apply appropriate varieties of research methods used in information science, management and business technology fields;
  • undertake research, which would usually be of an applied nature, into an appropriate aspect of information management and/or business technology, or a cognate field, under supervision;
  • apply and develop knowledge, skills and experience acquired during the programme of study.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment is via coursework only 鈥 there are no exams. Module assignments are based on real world problems and incorporate a mixture of presentations, written reports and essays. You will also complete a 15,000-word dissertation based on a research topic of your choice.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:
