Established in 1959, our Ergonomics and Human Factors degree will develop your understanding of the field across a range of sectors, examining how best to ensure a good fit between people, their actions, the objects they use and the environments which they occupy.

You will apply theoretical principles, data and methods to ensure that design is optimised for human well-being and overall system performance. You will also have the option to select one of the following specialist streams: human factors for inclusive design, human factors in transport, human factors and ergonomics for patient safety, or ergonomics in health and community care.

You will benefit from teaching provided by world-leading academics, industry experts and specialists, ensuring that you are trained to the highest professional standard. Previous guest speakers for this programme include industry experts from Humanscale, EDF Energy, Rolls Royce and AMEC, as well as specialists in health and safety, aviation safety, environmental health, health practitioners and experienced lecturers from other universities.

As well as the full-time MSc qualification (8 modules and a project), this programme is also offered as a Postgraduate Diploma (8 modules) and Postgraduate Certificate (4 modules). These can all be studied full or part-time according to student preference.

This degree is designed to help you develop ergonomics competencies in critical and practical skills and the scientific methods necessary for professional practice. The modules you will study will depend on the pathway you specialise in 鈥� please see the programme specifications for the modules relevant to each pathway.

Compulsory modules

The field of Cognitive Ergonomics involves the competencies and limitations of users during their interaction with a system in general (e.g., attention, memory, perception, schemas and strategies, mental models and cognitive workload).
The main aim of this module is to provide an introductory overview of Cognitive Ergonomics, to describe specific cognitive functions and to describe everyday situations where they may be applied including the workplace, the home, in transportation, education, healthcare and in other environments.

An additional aim of the module is to introduce the basic concept of ergonomics as a scientific discipline that is involved in the evaluation of tasks, jobs, products, environments and systems and how these interact with humans.

The aim of this module is for students to gain a foundation in topics relevant to physical ergonomics: anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and anthropometry. This will include aspects of physical performance in work and leisure activities. The purpose is to provide a basis for understanding applications in other modules on the Ergonomics and Human Factors programmes.

The aim of the module is to enable students to understand the physical effects of the workplace on human health.

The aim of this module is for students to develop their understanding of and skills in collecting and analysing data relevant to humans and human activities.

The aim of this module is for students to gain a working knowledge of the process of user experience design and the development of effective user interfaces.

The aim of this module is to enable students to understand systems ideas as they apply to human factors and to organizations, the causation of systems accidents, the consequences of these for the design of systems, and to have a framework of knowledge for further use in professional and social life.

The aim of the module is to enable students to understand the relation between physical factors of the environment (climate, sound, and lighting) and worker performance.

The aim of the module is to enable students to understand the physical effects of the workplace on human health.

The aim of this module is to:

improve students' understanding of ageing and disability, and the needs of other vulnerable users, and how these relate to design
underpin this understanding with reference to models and legislation
explore the concepts of 'universal' and 'inclusive' design, as applied to particular applications
explore how ergonomists can play a part in the inclusive design of products, technologies, services and the built environment.

This module aims to give students a broad-based understanding of how human factors and ergonomics principles are implemented within different transport domains and how this impacts on transport user safety. The Module will address different modalities and different transport users. The module will examine the safe systems approach to transport safety using the University campus as a Case Study. Special consideration will be given to developments in autonomous vehicles.

The aims of this module are:

to give the student the experience of tackling ergonomic problems vigorously and fully in the area of their chosen specialisation;
to integrate with the taught parts of the programme in a practical context;
to provide the students with training and experience in problem positioning, methods of investigation, data interpretation and report preparation.

The aim of this module is for students to gain an understanding of applying ergonomics methods and knowledge to the health and social care field.
This applied module will provide the student with tools and skills to evaluate the effects of care delivery from an organisational, worker and patient/service user perspective.
This will include aspects of patient safety, environmental design and safety behaviour in the care context.

The aim of this module is for students to gain a foundation in the academic and contextual setting of the role of the patient-handling advisor. This will include the legal aspects of working in health and social care, the role of health and safety, and organisational risk management. This module will apply basic ergonomics principles to the physical issues involved in the moving and handling of people in care environments.

The aims of this module are:

to give the student the experience of tackling ergonomic problems vigorously and fully in the area of their chosen specialisation;
to integrate with the taught parts of the programme in a practical context;
to provide the students with training and experience in problem positioning, methods of investigation, data interpretation and report preparation.

How you'll be assessed

You will be assessed through a combination of individual reports, group evaluations, group presentations, open book tests, class tests, critiques, coursework, a dissertation and a viva voce.

How you'll study

Each module is block taught over a one-week intensive period. This flexible approach is suitable for those who wish to work full or part-time alongside their studies. Outside of this time you will be expected to complete additional programme materials and assignments. We will provide you with access to an interactive online system with additional materials and information, where you will also remotely participate in tutorial-type discussions.

Where you'll study

Our Environmental Ergonomics Research Centre facilities include an environmental test suite, light and vision labs. This is located in a purpose-built facility close to the Design building and enables students to study the interaction of people with their physical environment.

The fee stated is for a full-time student undertaking a master’s programme of 180 credits. Your development

On successful completion of the programme, you will have developed expert skills in information technology, numeracy, problem solving, teamwork and management.

You will develop skills needed to access instructional material (eg experimental demonstrations) and research tools (eg statistical packages) on computers and search for relevant material on the internet. You will become proficient in numerical data collection and be able to present it clearly in tables and graphs, and to analyse it using a range of statistical tools.

You will also become skilled in clarifying important questions related to ergonomics and human factors, demonstrating an ability to consider alternative solutions and evaluate outcomes. You will learn to share responsibility for a task with others, to agree common goals and methods and to co-ordinate the use of common resources.

As a graduate of this programme, you will have experience in project management, including its contextual interfaces. You will be proficient in controlling and leading meetings, writing reports, demonstrating key skills, and understanding training and skills issues.

The School of Design and Creative Arts boasts strong industry links and, as part of our Ergonomics and Human Factors degree, you will be encouraged to undertake your main project in industry. This experience provides you with realistic experiences and an opportunity to apply your learning in a professional context. Module content has a strong practitioner bias, where learning provides essential vocational training for your future career.

Successful completion of this master's programme will enable you to become a professional ergonomics or human factors practitioner. The broad nature of the programme also opens up career opportunities in other scientific and research careers too.

Example jobs held by our recent graduates include: Chief Trials Officer; Ergonomist and Automotive Engineer; Graduate Human Factors Engineer; Human Factors Consultant; Scientist; Usability Designer/Engineer; User Researcher; and UX/Human Factors/Risk Consultant.

Recent graduate destinations include Dyson, Philips, Jaguar Land Rover, government agencies, and design/engineering/risk consultancies in various sectors (medical device, defence, rail, automobile, nuclear, oil and gas, etc). Other graduates have gone on to pursue further research careers (PhDs).
