The Contemporary Literature & Culture MA enables graduates to explore British and American fiction, poetry, and drama, analysing contemporary issues such as #MeToo, the Covid pandemic, and climate change, and understanding how literary prizes influence the production of today鈥檚 literature.

Postgraduate study in English at 天堂视频 is for graduates who aspire to create and interpret the literary cultures of the twenty-first century. Our courses offer an inclusive and practical approach to textual study and expression, enabling you to enhance your understanding and creation of contemporary writing through peer learning and hands-on projects.

You will be supported to organise and host a literary festival, contributing to the modern literary scene, and join a vibrant community of scholars and experts on campus who will support you in pursuing your intellectual goals, whether academic, cultural, or commercial.

The course provides you with the opportunity to study a range of cultural forms, including literature, digital media,鈥痙rama, film, and television, in order to analyse what we understand by the contemporary and its culture. Modules attend to cultural and theoretical responses to contemporary events, crises, and phenomena that shape our lives and environments, such as global warming, Black Lives Matter, gender rights, late-stage capitalism, technological communication and innovation, migration, the rise of populism and the far right, and the Covid-19 pandemic. A distinctive focus is on how contemporary publishing, prizes, and their promotional strategies shape the literary landscape and its politics.

The programme furnishes knowledge and skillsets that are put to practical use in an innovative core module that sees students collectively contribute to the dissemination of contemporary literature by planning and holding a literary festival in the summer term. The culmination of the programme is the research and writing of the final dissertation on a topic chosen and developed by each student individually.

Our MA in Contemporary Literature and Culture is for graduates who aspire to gain the skills and knowledge that unlock careers in a wide range of sectors, including the arts and arts management, publishing, journalism, teaching, and the legal and financial sectors. The course is suitable for students from a humanities background with an interest in developing both careers skills and advancing intellectual ambition, with a view to further research or employment.

The MA is underpinned by expertise from staff who are leaders in contemporary literature. They have published books, acted as journal and book series editors, and have played leading roles in organisations dedicated to the study of contemporary literature. We have strengths across the cultural forms of fiction, life writing, poetry, film, and drama, and our interests in gender, speculative fiction, American studies, and creative writing inform the content of the programme.

Our Contemporary Literature and Culture MA is designed to provide opportunity to study a range of cultural forms to create an understanding and appreciation of literature and culture in the contemporary period.

Compulsory modules

The module aims to introduce students to a range of different research methods; develop their research skills to Master's level; and enhance their library skills. It also aims to introduce them to different ways of engaging in research cultures appropriate to the focus of their studies; enable them to develop a research profile; understand ethics approval; and gain skills in the presentation of their research. The module prepares students for the Dissertation module and aims to provide them with skills useful for disseminating the results of their dissertation after they graduate.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the modes of writing used to interpret for contemporary audiences matters related to heritage and culture. This will include historical novels, memoirs, non-fiction and public-facing information and reviews. We will consider what we can learn about contemporary society from the way these topics are being written about in contemporary (post 2000) texts.

The aim of this module is to introduce key contemporary theories and literature to explore phenomena that structure our present world, such as technology, time, consumption, work, identities, and globalisation. Attention will be given to case studies of contemporary crises, including 9/11, the financial crash (2007-8), twenty-first-century increases in migration to the West, Black Lives Matter, the Covid-19 global pandemic, and other examples.

Compulsory modules

On this collaborative, project-based module, students will collectively plan, curate, promote, and hold a modest literary festival at the end of semester two, open to the public and the 天堂视频 community. This will involve developing and utilising practical skills in terms of event planning and organisation, logistics and scheduling, and marketing and promotion. Intellectual and literary discussions will inform decisions over invitee authors, the design, tone, and theme of the festival, considerations of representation and equality, and the drafting of interview questions and introductory speeches. Collaboration with LU Arts is possible and the module will also be an opportunity to showcase creative writing by students.

The aim of this module is to introduce three formative intersecting elements of contemporary literature and culture: the market for books, the world of literary prizes, and the evolving `canon' of contemporary literary works being subjected to sustained study within the academy. Attention will be given to: (1) the particular features of book marketing and the market for contemporary literature in Britain; (2) the operation and significance of literary prizes; and (3) the correlation/disrelation between what is popular in the marketplace, what has been deemed prize-worthy, and the works which have become part of the literary canon by attracting the interests of multiple and intergenerational academic readerships and bearing (or appearing to bear) what Ezra Pound once called the `stamp of permanence'.

The aim of this module is to explore forms of literary, cinematic and other cultural production that have emerged in the United States during the particularly fraught era of the twenty-first century.

The module will give students the opportunity to develop a significant, sustained body of writing informed by advanced research skills. Students will use research methods learned in Resources for Advanced Research (semester 1) to conduct research into an aspect of their literary-critical or creative work, and deploy their findings in the subsequent writing. Students will have the opportunity to work one-to-one with a specialist in their field over six tutorials.

As part of the 'Literary Festival Management' module, students collaborate with LU Arts to hold a literary festival to a professional standard which is open to the public and the 天堂视频 community. This involves developing and utilising practical skills in terms of event planning and organisation, including selecting visiting authors and other speakers; organising panels; contacting publishers; and marketing. Dr Jennifer Cooke

Head of English

Jennifer is Head of English and a Reader in Contemporary Literature and Theory. Jennifer鈥檚 teaching areas of expertise are literary and critical theory, especially feminism, queer and gender theory, affect theory, and theories of intimacy and kinship.

Dr Si芒n Adiseshiah

Reader in English and Drama

Si芒n is at the forefront of the field of contemporary literary studies. She is Editor-in-Chief of the journal C21 Literature and Editor of the book series Playwriting and the Contemporary: Critical Collaborations, published by Liverpool University Press.

Dr Claire O'Callaghan

Programme Leader and Lecturer in English

Claire's research interests lie in Victorian and neo-Victorian studies, with a focus on gender, sexuality, identity, and the body. She is an expert on the lives and works of the Bront毛s, and the writing of Sarah Waters.

Dr Deirdre O'Byrne

University Teacher in English

Deidre's specialism lies in contemporary Irish literature and has written publications on Irish women's poetry, Irish history and gender politics.

Dr Clare Hutton

Reader in English and Digital Humanities

Clare teaches broadly across nineteenth and twentieth century British and Irish literature, and has expertise in digital literary scholarship, digital humanities, and contemporary literature.

Dr Paul Jenner

Lecturer in English

Paul's principal research interests are in North American fiction, philosophy, and intellectual history, with a particular focus on the philosopher and critic Stanley Cavell. He has expertise in fiction, philosophy, and critical theory which forms his teaching.

Dr Brian Jarvis

Senior Lecturer in English

Brian is Americanist specialist whose research focuses on contemporary American fiction, film and visual culture, crime and punishment, cultural geography and Marxist critical theory.
