Advanced Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) for Short-Term (Visiting) and Exchange Students
Who needs to apply for an ATAS certificate?
You do not need an ATAS certificate if:
- You are a UK, EEA or Swiss or other or you hold Indefinite Leave to Enter/Remain in the UK
- You are applying to study in a School which is not listed below.
You will need an ATAS certificate if:
- You require a Student, Short-Term Student, Visitor, Skilled Worker or Temporary Worker (Tier 5) visa to undertake a short course, a short period of study or a study exchange programme where you will be studying final year undergraduate or taught postgraduate modules or
- You are studying a taught postgraduate programme by Distance Learning which requires you to be in attendance at the University for one or more modules, and
- You will be studying in one of the following Schools or Departments:
- Department of Aeronautical Engineering - CAH3 code: CAH10-01-04
- Department of Chemical Engineering - CAH3 code: CAH10-01-09
- Department of Materials - CAH3 code: CAH10-02-02
- Department of Physics - CAH3 code: CAH07-01-01
- School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering - Mechanical Engineering - CAH3 code: CAH10-01-02
You may be asked for the name of a supervisor at the University as part of your ATAS application. You should give the name of your contact in the academic school you will be studying in. If you don't know who this is, please see Supervisor contact names relating to your study area on the Undergraduate and Postgraduate ATAS webpages.
If you are a study exchange student, the Study Exchanges Team will contact you directly about your ATAS application in relation to module choice.
If you are studying at PhD, MPhil, or EngD level, or undertaking a period of research as part of an overseas postgraduate qualification, it is likely that you will need an ATAS certificate for most subject areas. Please see the ATAS webpage for Researchers for more information.
