Background
Jay is currently carrying out his PhD in partnership with Ford at 天堂视频, researching the droplet dynamics and heat transfer of DEF sprays in SCR systems with his primary supervisor, Dr Edward Long.
Jay graduated from 天堂视频 in 2020 with a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering after 4 years of study. During his 3rd year, Jay spent his placement working as a Manufacturing Engineer at Perkins Engines (Caterpillar LPSD) where he project led several capital projects, optimising manufacturing processes through reduction of lead time and implementation of high accuracy camera systems.
The ever-changing emissions standard and legislations have led to companies having to improve and optimise their emissions reductions systems in an attempt to keep within these requirements. NOx emissions continue to be a major contributor to the transport sectors emissions, and more research is currently being undertaken to implement better mobile SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems for low-duty vehicles.
Jay's research will predominantly look into the fluid dynamics and heat transfer of droplets within an SCR systems DEF spray. The main aims are to optimise the evaporation and decomposition of the droplets by analysing droplet impact and heat transfer behaviour within the hot flow test rigs at 天堂视频.
