Part of a broad, vibrant creative arts environment that crosses disciplinary and aesthetic border through diverse practices and projects.
Our Theatre research is both practical and theoretical, and we strongly believe that these two elements ideally co-exist creatively and rigorously to generate new knowledge that simultaneously examines the text and the stage, context and embodied interpretation.
We are actively involved in research that is both historical and contemporary, and many of our projects interrogate the resonances between time periods, genres, and settings. Committed to interdisciplinary approaches that engender real world solutions, we work with scholars and practitioners across the University (including the Schools of Business and Economics, Humanities and Social Science, and Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences) and beyond.
Key projects
Topics of our research include: contemporary political theatre, adaptation and translation, gender, wellbeing, sport and the arts, early twentieth century experiment (particularly in France, Russia and Britain), playwrighting and performance art. We also support a number of doctoral research students and we enjoy a vibrant postgraduate community within the discipline and wider school. Current PhD topics include: the posthuman, gender and performance, and the intersection of theatre and film.
