Summary of project activities and outcomes:
The project developed and enhanced a set of analytical tools to provide diagnostics of faecal sludge management (FSM) services in poor urban areas at a city-wide scale. Initial analysis of extensive primary data collected in 5 major cities, using a common methodology and analysis framework, led to the development of diagnostic tools and guidelines to support improved FSM services.
The project considered the wide-ranging enabling environment, political economy and service delivery factors that affect both current and future scenarios for FSM services. WEDC worked in close collaboration with Oxford Policy Management, the World Bank Water and Sanitation Program, and a number of individual consultants, to identify how the various components could be analysed together, as a way to both advocate for change and support decision-making by governments and donors to invest effectively in FSM as part of broad urban sanitation improvements.
