Experts in Sport: Injury prevention and management in women鈥檚 football

As the 2023 FIFA Women鈥檚 World Cup makes waves around the world, the Experts in Sport podcast continues to highlight the many factors present in women鈥檚 football.

In this episode, Dr Katrine Okholm Kryger (Associate Professor in Sports Rehabilitation at St Mary’s University) sits down with host Martin Foster and co-host Rebecca Sawiuk to discuss the occurrence and prevalence of injuries in women’s football.

She tackles the gender inequality that may occur in women’s football, as well as the factors that affect the level of injury risk – such as infrastructure, facilities, and training.

The panel also discuss the impact different types of football pitch may have on performance, as well as the importance of wearing the correct, well-fitted and comfortable football boot.

Finally, Dr Okholm Kryger explains the necessary academic research required towards injury prevention.

Katrine’s work is divided between two main roles: Medical Researcher at FIFA and Associate Professor in Sports Rehabilitation at St Mary’s University. She is part of the UEFA Fitness for Football Advisory Group and Women’s Health Panel, and works as an Honorary Lecturer in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary University in London.

She also collaborates with confederations, organisations, national teams and elite-level football clubs to improve evidence-based practice in football medicine.
