Professor Eberlein, who was until recently Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Sussex, will take up the role in September.
Her main research interests are in applying quantum field theory to nanotechnology and atomic physics.
She is passionate about teaching innovation and champions the use of new technology to enhance learning. She is also an ardent supporter of equality, in particular for women in science, and has written on the subject for outlets including the .
Professor Eberlein graduated from the University of Leipzig, Germany, in 1990 with a Masters degree in Physics, and was awarded her PhD in 1993 from the University of Sussex.
Subsequently she held a postdoctoral research associateship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, in the group led by Nobel Prize winner .
From 1995 she worked as the Ruth Holt Research Fellow at Newnham College, University of Cambridge, and in 1997 moved back to Sussex on a Royal Society University Research Fellowship.
After eight years of Fellowship she progressed through the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Reader to Professor in Theoretical Physics. She gained extensive academic leadership experience as Director of Teaching and Learning from 2009 to 2014 before her appointment as Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from January 2015.
