Highly rated in national university league tables and number one in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for sports-related subjects seven years running, the School鈥檚 wide-ranging expertise encompasses such diverse areas as medicine, molecular biology, nutrition, biomechanics, economics, pedagogy, psychology, sociology, and sport management.

The School is home to over 200 members of academic and senior research staff, 257 research students and 59 members of administrative, technical and management/specialist staff.

With globally renowned staff collaborating with other academic institutions, centres, and industry partners around the world, the School has been recognised for the quality of its research (commended in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise) and enjoys a high profile in the media.

Research within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences continues to have a far-reaching impact and reflects the global interests of staff and their extensive international collaboration. Research is multi-disciplinary, drawing on the full spectrum of natural and social sciences, and is focused on issues of contemporary concern at international, national, and local levels.

The School is renowned for fundamental and applied research which supports knowledge advancement and informs the practice of organisations worldwide. A broad range of social and natural sciences contribute to the School’s research activity which is organised within three themes:

The School has a strong and established contribution in research exploring how sport, exercise and health can be more inclusive and the benefits of sport in creating vibrant and inclusive societies.

We have a particular track record in disability sport and health, and we are building capacity in women’s health and women’s sport development, and to align with current sports research agendas and we would be particularly keen to hear from candidates whose research can add to these areas.

Sport Performance

Professor, Reader (Associate Professor), Senior Lecturer and Lecturer in Sport Performance

The School has an established history of research and teaching in the science of Sport Performance.

Academics from a broad range of disciplines from medicine through to sociology contribute in a multi-disciplinary way.  We are keen to hear from candidates at all levels and from any discipline whose research contributes to this area, in particular those with a focus on sport coaching and leadership, disability and para sport, sport psychology, and sport data analytics.

Strategic Developments

Professor, Reader (Associate Professor), Senior Lecturer and Lecturer in Strategic Developments

The School is an academic partner in the National Rehabilitation Centre and works closely with the military in the Defence Rehabilitation Centre.

We have a growing critical mass of academics whose research is applicable to the work of the NRC (National Rehabilitation Centre), in particular those whose research focus is in rehabilitation. We also want to grow our research in AI and big data related to health, sport management, and to rehabilitation.

We're keen to hear from colleagues whose research is focussed on sustainability and sport management and in metaverse and data analytics in the development of sport.

With access to state-of-the-art laboratories, teaching resources, equipment, sport, and exercise facilities including the establishment of a £10m pioneering sport and exercise medicine centre at 天堂视频 (one of three regional hubs that, together, form the country's first ever National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine), 天堂视频 and the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences offer both a truly unique student experience and a dynamic centre of research excellence.
