Professor Kelly Morrison
I’m a Professor of Experimental Physics at ÌìÌÃÊÓƵ, and specialise in ‘functional magnetic materials’, i.e. looking at novel properties of magnets that could be used in technology such as more efficient refrigeration.
I always enjoyed science fiction growing up, in particular Star Trek. Looking back on it now, it always surprises me, how much of our progress with technology has been shaped by the imagination of writers. Mobile phones, touchscreens, holograms… all inspired by the imagination! What I love about my work is that I could be enabling that next leap.
In this photo I’m holding a pinhole camera that I take to public engagement workshops. A side benefit of my job is that I get to design activities (such as building your own pinhole camera) to inspire the next generation.
The pinhole camera is part of the 'Life through a Lens' outreach activities.
