My research looks at optimising food-first nutritional approaches to improve recovery from exercise.
I have a particular interest in plant foods and dietary patterns, which typically possess high anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and may help mitigate the oxidative and inflammatory stress induced by exercise.
A key component of recovery from exercise is the return to ‘normal’ muscle function and strength (hence the dumbbell)! To assess this, we use a range of functional performance tests and laboratory techniques, including peripheral nerve stimulation.
My research allows me to delve deeper into my long-held interest in sports performance (I was a dancer and gymnast myself) and constantly ask ‘why?’.
As a Postgraduate University Teacher in SSEHS, I also teach our undergraduate and postgraduate students in the areas of Strength & Conditioning, Kinesiology and Neuromuscular Function.
