New automated reporting systems, novel testing techniques and equipment
A three-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) allowed us to work with leading artificial sports pitch maintenance specialists, .
Together we have developed a suite of tests to assess surface maintenance processes and produce a management system to predict surface longevity.
Benefits for the company
Crucially, the project has allowed the company to underpin its practice with objective scientific data and develop new automated reporting systems as well as novel testing techniques and equipment.
In a significant step, the company is now able to support its clients in providing quality assurance for their warranties on projects – and is developing the industry’s first formal qualification in the maintenance of synthetic sports surfaces.
The company’s enhanced profile and reputation as the UK’s leading specialist has resulted in major new contracts, including with England Rugby, and Football Foundation and Premier League football clubs.

The KTP has also created benefits for the University – not least our ongoing and valuable partnership with Technical Surfaces.
Conducting a long-term study in this niche industry, including field – as opposed to laboratory – tests has enhanced our understanding of artificial surfaces whilst providing projects for our students, developing their ability to address real industry challenges.
The project has also resulted in at least , and been the subject of research seminars and invited presentations.
More widely, the KTP has impacted the entire industry as organisations realise and accept the importance of scientific evidence to support practice.
