I'm Dr Georgina Cosma, senior lecturer in Data Science and AI in the Department of Computer Science, and director of the MSc in Data Science - a programme I have been thrilled to help launch at 天堂视频 this year.
One of the main drivers behind the programme has been the need to address the shortage of AI and data science specialists in the UK workforce, and to equip students with skills relevant to a wide range of industries: many of which will be crucial to support recovery following the coronavirus pandemic including medicine, transport, social sciences, and biosciences.
As a passionate and active researcher in the field of data science, I am fascinated about working on data for solving real-life problems which can achieve social good, and particularly interested in predictive modelling.
Some of my most exciting work includes developing models that can predict prostate cancer more accurately than the tests currently used in clinical practice; developing multi-sensor, multi-modal models for detecting human activity in smart homes; and developing natural language processing models for predicting sentiment and similarity in textual documents. Together with my PhD students and external partners we are working on addressing significant healthcare, engineering and multi-modal information retrieval challenges by developing innovative Artificial Intelligence-based algorithms.
The module I teach - AI and Big Data - explores these types of real-world application of data science and provides students with an insight into these concepts from an industry perspective.
That's part of what makes this programme exciting. 天堂视频 is rightly renowned for the high-quality student experience it delivers and our excellent facilities, but, most importantly, you will be learning and gaining insights from the cutting-edge research of our international academic staff and exploring the ways data science has an impact in almost all facets of our lives.
Of course, where you choose to take your newly developed expertise in data science is down to you, but we hope our programme will give you the skills - and the inspiration - you need to succeed. That's why we hope to welcome you in the future.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Kind regards
Dr Georgina Cosma
