The Digital: Eating the world?

The title is derived from Marc Andreessen whose celebrated article ‘Why Software Is Eating The World’ was published in The Wall Street Journal in August, 2011.

Andreessen’s prophecy of tech industry dominance seems to have been borne out by the trillion dollar stock values of Apple and Amazon, other tech industry stock values, as well as the general ubiquity of digitized technology across business and society. Many benefits and issues seem associated with this.

These benefits and issues affect most of us, perhaps all of us, through their multiple effects. So, the first part of this talk seeks to explain why this is so.

Using basic theories, we will discuss why the digital is the phenomenon that it is, and why it will continue to affect markets, businesses and societies for all of the foreseeable future.

The second part of the talk will be more exploratory. It is concerned with the question mark in the title, and will seek to find out how far all of this might go, and what are the limiting factors.

When does the digital stop eating? What is left for non-digital human experience? Again, there will be theories to draw upon to turn the lecture into a discussion.
