Study support

The Department of Physics provides you with extensive study resources and academic support. In addition, you will benefit from the University's well-established support services, covering all aspects of student life.

PLS HLP - Physics Learning and Support

In the Department of Physics we offer one-to-one support from our team of tutors through PLS HLP.

Students can book sessions using Learn.

What our students say:

"It's nice to go to a quieter more focused environment to work through problems, and with the support available you can get a much better understanding of the content taught that week and lots of help with the problems you get set. Really good resource to use whether you're struggling or not."

"PLS HLP helped me so much especially as a first year. It gave me the opportunity to speak to older students studying the same course as me who are always happy to have a chat and offer help as well as the staff who are there to support you. The environment is very welcoming from staff and students and is a place I can go if I’m ever struggling. What I find especially helpful is being able to work in a group environment, it makes a nice change from studying independently and it means you can get help immediately rather than struggling on your own. PLS HLP is a brilliant part of the department that I will continue to use throughout my degree."

Mathematics Learning Support Centre (MLSC)

In your studies you may well encounter mathematics and statistics that is new and challenging to you. 天堂视频's award-winning Mathematics Learning Support Centre (MLSC) is here to help you.

Mathematics and statistics support is available to every 天堂视频 student throughout your university journey, whether on campus or not.

The dedicated and friendly Tutors will help build your confidence to tackle the mathematics or statistics content of your modules and can support you with anything from a quick mathematics question to exam revision to the statistics in your research projects.

The MLSC is based in Room 0.20 of the Schofield Building and is open as a private study space, during term time, between 9am-5pm Monday-Friday with Tutors on duty to answer your questions between 11am-1pm and 3pm-5pm daily.

This drop-in service requires no booking and is complemented by bookable remote mathematics and statistics support on MS Teams. Remote support is available 5 days a week and you may wish to share your booking link with friends so they can benefit from your online support session too.

The MLSC also offers specialised statistics support for final year project students and postgraduates who are seeking advice on collecting and analysing data for their dissertation.

Book a 20 minute remote mathematics/statistics session or an extended 30 minute statistics advisory service session for project students on our website or via our LEARN page.

Lecturers and your academic tutor

Our approprochable teaching staff operate an open-door policy. If you have further questions to ask you lecturers, you can always ask them during or after a lecture, or, if the lecturer is not in, email them to make an appointment.

You will also be able to get further help and guidance in tutorials with your Academic Tutor.

Peer-assisted learning

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) offers optional weekly sessions to pupils studying a particular module. Facilitated by volunteer Peer Assisted Learning Facilitators (PALF’s), Peer Assisted Learning aims to create an opportunity for further exploration and understanding within the field of study. PAL sessions are in addition to the teaching provision that is already offered by the University, and aims to offer an informal and low-pressure environment for students of all abilities to ask questions, improve their grades, develop study skills and get to know the people on their course.

Personal Best

Personal Best provides students with the opportunity to develop, recognise and better articulate their own skills and attributes, leading to greater self-awareness and success both academically and in their future lives and careers.

A unique framework of key skills and competencies was devised after consultation with colleagues, students and employers. It presents the skills and behaviours that students will be encouraged and prompted to develop in various ways. These skills are valuable for all undergraduate and postgraduate students and for researchers, at whatever age or level of experience.

You can access Personal Best through the myLboro app.
