Christmas Lecture: Excitable waves

  • 12 December 2022

This year's Department of Mathematical Sciences Christmas Lecture will be delivered by Paul Sutcliffe, Professor of theoretical physics at the University of Durham.

Examples of excitable waves include a Mexican wave in a football stadium, a heartbeat, slime mould signalling, and oxidation waves in chemical reactions. This talk will demonstrate some of the properties of excitable waves and describe some mathematical modelling that can be used to understand some unusual wave patterns created in chemical experiments that produce a happy reaction.

Refreshments will be available from 5:30pm
