Professor Richard ‘Dick’ Wilson
18 January 2023
Professor Richard ‘Dick’ Wilson sadly passed away on 18 January 2023.
Professor Wilson worked at the School of Business and Economics in the mid 1990s until the early 2000s.
Professor Wilson had recently been granted the Outstanding Contribution to Accounting and Finance Education Award from the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA). This was not the first time that his work had been acknowledged, having received a Lifetime Achievement Award from BAFA’s Accounting Education SIG in 2006, as well as a long list of other awards and accolades.
Professor Wilson was passionate about his academic career, and is widely seen as one of the pioneers of the whole area of accounting education in both research and teaching. He was also a prolific PhD supervisor with many of his students going on to hold very senior roles in universities in the UK and beyond. Alongside his many visiting positions at different universities in the Uk and elsewhere, he was also a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2012, an honour he distinguished as one of his proudest achievements.
Professor Wilson took being a part of the academic community very seriously, and his colleagues and students saw him as an “old school” professor as he would regurarly host social gatherings for his Business School colleagues at his home.Throughout his career, he always acknowledged the tremendous support he had from his wife Gill.
