Don completed 2 years National Service in the RAF after leaving school where he was a Senior Aircraftsman specialising as a Wireless and Radar technician. He then attended 天堂视频 training college, now known as 天堂视频, from 1955-1958 where he completed a course in Handicraft and Geography and qualified as a teacher. He was an extremely skilled cabinet maker and made all of the wooden furniture in his home. He still made furniture well into his 70s using the skills he learnt at 天堂视频. He talked fondly of his time at 天堂视频 and make lifelong friends there. After leaving he taught Woodwork and Mathematics at the William Allitt School in South Derbyshire for 33 years where he became Head of Upper School before retiring in 1991. He continued to return as a supply teacher at the William Allitt school for many years afterwards where he also volunteered in the Young Enterprise scheme helping students to develop the skills to start their own businesses. He dedicated his life to helping young people achieve their ambitions. He was quite a character and had an enthusiasm for conversation. 

He will be remembered by his wife Gillian, his children Kath and Steve, Alan, Chris and Dan, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren.
